Tour Details

This tour begins in the majestic city of Cusco, passing through towns in the sacred valley such as Ollantaytambo, Santa Maria, Santa Teresa, and Hidroeléctrica by car, before beginning a 2-hour walk along an old flat path surrounded by vegetation and tropical landscapes to the town of Aguas Calientes, where we will enjoy a visit to the Citadel of Machu Picchu the following day.

The Machu Picchu by Car Tour was created in 1999 as an alternative route due to the limitations of the train that leads to Aguas Calientes. By participating in this Adventure, you will be helping to develop the towns that exist along the route, as well as enjoying a beautiful panorama full of landscapes and snow-capped Peruvian Andes mountains.

Why Explore Peru Treks?

Explore Peru Treks, is a fully locally owned tour operator in Cusco. We are certified local guides with an excellent knowledge of Incas history and culture. As natives, our guides will be sharing some of the astonishing facts on this action packed travel experience from Cusco.

We offer the 2 day by car tour to Machu Picchu, both as a small group tour and as a private tour.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Santa Teresa - Aguas Calientes

We will begin the tour at 6:30 a.m. and travel to Ollantaytambo, taking in the gorgeous scenery of the area. We will make a 30-minute halt at this location. Then we’ll continue our journey up a winding road to Habra Malaga, which sits at 4316 meters above sea level and offers views of Cusco’s most beautiful landscapes. We’ll continue our descent into the jungle, going through various altitude levels that blend idyllic scenery of towering snow-capped mountains with the scorching Inca jungle.

Once we arrive in Santa Maria, we will travel over an unpaved road that is in good condition (unpaved) to the town of Santa Teresa, which is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level. After a delectable lunch prepared with a variety of foods to suit the tastes of the clients, we will continue traveling for another 40 minutes to arrive to Machupicchu’s hydroelectric power facility.

The Company Staff is waiting for us there to begin the 2 hour and 30 minute trek through the Inca forest to the village of Aguas Calientes, where we can already see the spectacular citadel of Machupicchu, Huaynapicchu, and a variety of flora and animals.

We will arrive at the town of Aguas Calientes, where they will be assigned to their individual rooms in the hostel, and you may spend your free time exploring the town or visiting the town’s thermo-medicinal baths. Then we will have a lovely meal and then hear from the guide who will be leading the guided tour of Machupicchu’s citadel.

Day 2Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

We will leave very early for the Sanctuary of Machupicchu, where you will have two options: walk for 1 hour and a half or purchase 30 minute bus tickets to the sanctuary.

After a two-hour guided tour of the most prominent sites within the Machupicchu Sanctuary. You’ll have free time to explore additional attractions on your own.

Following that, we’ll walk back to the hydroelectric plant, where we’ll wait for our units or cars to return to Cusco through the same path, arriving late at night.
