The reserve’s macaw clay lick (Collpa de Guacamayos) is one of Tambopata’s wildlife highlights, with a dozen different types of forest and some beautiful oxbow lakes. Hundreds of thousands of brightly colorful macaws and parrots flock to the cliffs every day to feast on mineral salts. The Tambopata Reserve Zone’s enormous diversity of species, according to environmentalists, is attributable to its location at the intersection of lowland Amazon forest and three other habitats. The jaguar, big otter, ocelot, harpy eagle, and giant armadillo are among the 13 endangered species found here.
